WoW Gold Making Strategy: Flipping or Farming Transmogrification Items
Transmogrification was introduced in patch 4.3. At last, Blizzard introduced a system where you could use one item for looks and another for stats. This generated quite a lot of excitement and even more gold. Suddenly, items that you used to sell for 5g, hoping someone would buy them to DE and level enchanting on, were worth thousands of gold. The initial fervor has died down, but there is still profit to be made on these items.
How to Make Gold with Transmogrification
The essential fact is that items now have value for their appearance as well as for their stats. Often, these items are lower level which makes them easy for high level characters to farm. It also means they are likely to show up on the Auction House, hopefully for less than they are worth. THis means flipping and famring are both viable ways to make a profit on these items.
The most important part of the process (as it so often is) is the research. Make sure you start to build a Shopping List of desirable transmogrification items in Auctionator so that you can grab them off the AH when they show up.
Transmog Gold Making Resources on the Web
To help you out with your research, here is a round up of information and item lists out there in GoldBlogLand and beyond.
1] Keelhauls Big Flippin’ Mogging List
I think we can be justified in calling this ‘The List’ when it comes to Transmog items. The prices applied immediately after the patch though, so you probably won’t be able to get as much now.
A list that you can copy and paste into Auctionator to make buying up those items easier. It is not complete and does not contain all the items on The List but it is a good start.
3] Kaliope’s Transmog Items for Leatherworkers
A nice round up of good looking or interesting items that can be made by leatherworkers. ‘The List’ doesn’t give a lot of room to leather sets because the Mogfather doesn’t think they sell as well as mail or plate. But this might leave a gap in the market if your server already has gold makers using his list. This post fills in that gap for those of you who like the leather (who doesn’t really?). Each item has a pic of the piece modeled by Kaliope herself.
4] Power Word Gold: Transmogrification Profit and You
A good overview of the topic with plenty of useful links to roleplay outfit sites so you can check out item looks. This post was written before the patch was release, so there is more accurate information about pricing out there. As always though, prices vary so much from server to server and week to week that the only real way to know how to price anything is by doing your own leg work and researching your own market.
Keelhaul “The Mogfather”‘s own blog is mostly dedicated to reviewing, analyzing and ranking the appearance of various classes of item. When it comes to making gold with transmog items, you are probably just better off with “The List” itself. Having said that, Keelhaul is an engaging writer and his posts are fascinating and (asfaik) unique in the WoW blogosphere; so I’ll be adding him to my feed anyway.
6] Icy Veins Transmogrification Guide
There are plenty of sites that provide images of item models but Icy Veins is one of the best organized and easiest to use. Items are listed by class and you have the option to view armor sets or individual item models. Clicking in an armor set gives you the source of the set and a complete list of the items in the set with links to WoWhead.
Another site that allows you to see what items will look like when worn but this one focuses on outfits including character (Geek, Rambo, Harrison Jones etc), occupational and seasonal outfits. This site could be especially useful for gold makers on roleplay servers where you will find a bigger demand for this type of stuff.
